Town Square

The square is surrounded by diverse functions – a primary school building, a high school building, residential buildings, private housing and public buildings with parking. Due to this, it was important to make the space as functional as possible.

The concept behind the design was to create smaller areas within the square that would cater to each function, while keeping them all connected into one united space. This was done by raising the square onto different levels, where each level is dedicated to a different function and the levels are connected to each other by ramps (accented with wood panels that serve as a display area for student projects, while ramps allow for built-in seating).

Accessibility to the square is maintained for other city users, with the main path running diagonally across the square and connecting it with nearby streets.

All the ramps in the project are slanted at a 1:12 slope to ensure the spaces are easily accessible for those with disabilities and the elderly, while also being fun for kids (the other intended users of the square). Each level has something different to offer - playground, open public library, fountain area, green areas with trees and paved open spaces, with specially designed covered benches that provide shade from the sun or shelter from the rain.
